Melanie Bilenker

Melanie Bilenker created an installation for the Past Present Projects exhibition Victoriana Reimagined at the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion in 2018. Her piece, A Room, took the form of a tunnel book - a form popularized in the Victorian period as a novel viewing format. Bilenker’s work most often takes the form of small wearable jewelry employing strands of her own hair to create sparse line-work images. A Room expands this practice through a work larger in scale and free-standing. In this tunnel book, Bilenker used her signature medium to create a four-part image of her bedroom studio. Installed in the room interpreted as the “lady’s bedroom” at the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, A Room alludes to the quiet tasks allocated to the late night hours when the household has gone to sleep.
